Each participant or participant-guest will be booked into a private room with a twin bed, and will share a bathroom with one other person (if two siblings are registered as guests, they will share one private room with a twin bed and an inflatable bed).
Each apartment consists of 6 private rooms (4 upstairs, 2 downstairs), 3 bathrooms, and a shared living room / kitchen area. Click the video here to take a walkthrough of one of the units at Park Place!
The short answer is "Yes". Two participants can share the same room, but the price will be the same. However the bottom line is, everyone is booked into a private room. If you wish to change that around once you get into your apartment, and it's not going to bother your other flat mates, then it's no problem. Use one room for your luggage and the other for sleeping - you choose!
Food & Drink
Dinner: dinner each night will be included with your registration price.
Breakfast & Lunch: self catering. Choose from one of the many local restaurants or pick up some groceries and eat at the apartment. Everything is within a short walk from campus.
We will make several grocery shopping trips so you can pick up any other things you may want / need.
There are a ton of great places to eat in Ephraim, all with great food at very reasonable prices. Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Pizza, Burgers and more. Click the map to find out what is available and where.
Yes, for the group meals, there will be vegetarian and vegan options available.
Please note: to guarantee special meal requirements, you must indicate this this on your registration under "Dietary Restrictions".
Beer & Wine
Because this is meant to be a rejuvenating and healing experience, we feel that alcohol will actually detract from the potential impact that can be made. We are asking all participants to kindly restrict alcohol consumption to light "casual refreshment" - i.e. a beer or glass of wine in the evening is acceptable. However, we would encourage you to "try dry" and take a break from alcohol for the week. We will have plenty of other ways to bond with each other that don't involve drinking.
No hard liquor will be allowed at UTE - There will be no exceptions to this rule. Also bear in mind that Snow College campus is a dry campus, so it is absolutely prohibited to bring any alcohol (including beer and wine) on campus.
All recreational drugs, including Marijuana are strictly forbidden. Drug usage in Utah is illegal. Anyone found in possession of or under the influence of drugs, including marijuana, will be asked to leave the event and could potentially face criminal prosecution.
TRAVEL TO UTAH
PLEASE BE AWARE: Utah does NOT have a functional public transit system. The area in Sanpete County where UTE is held has no public transit options!
Flying: If you are flying to UTE, the best airport for both domestic and international travelers is Salt Lake City International (SLC). From here you can either rent a car or take our complimentary shuttle.
Snow College is located just under 2 hours drive south of Salt Lake City. It's a simple and beautiful drive down I-15 & Highway 89. Use our event map to have a look.
Rental Car: If you plan to visit more of the area either before or after UTE, then a rental car will be your best option. There are many options for rental cars from SLC International Airport, and Park Place Apartments has plenty of parking.
Shuttle: we will be running a complimentary shuttle to/from the airport. Shuttle times are as follows:
Saturday, August 1st: 11:00 AM & 5:00 PM pick-up from SLC International
Monday, August 10th. 9:00 AM & 1:00 PM departure for SLC International (11:00 and 15:00 arrival, respectively)
Participants: your transportation during UTE will be taken care of. If you have a rental car you are welcome to use it, but we will have space to accommodate all participants to and from activity locations.*
*Please note that this includes Participants only. Participant-Guests will be responsible for their own transportation.
Concert / Workshops
Twice during the week we will be presenting informal taiko information / Q&A evenings and short public workshops. These sessions will be led by our management team, but as a participant you can assist us in teaching the local community how to play taiko!
We think this is a wonderful way for us to bond with one another, and also a fantastic means of saying thank you to Snow College and the local community for hosting us.
On our final evening, all of us will be presenting the local community with an amazing taiko concert, held on the Snow College football field (or in the event of rain, in the Concert Hall).
This concert will consist of community songs that can be learned in advance, as well as material we create together throughout the week.
This will be the first ever taiko concert in the entire Sanpete county area and we are thrilled to have the chance to share taiko with a brand new community!
No, of course you can choose to not participate, but we think you will really want to!
Sharing is such an important part of any art form, and it is really one of those things you have to do to understand just how valuable it is. Try it! We will be there to back you up :)
As we progress in planning, we will put together a list of songs that will be played. At that point you can let us know what songs you would like to play.
Don't worry, we will be posting video and audio resources, note sheets and everything we have available to help you in learning the songs we plan to play.
And remember, a lot of the songs will be material we compose together over the week, so there will be plenty of opportunities for you to participate!
When we were planning this, we thought about all of the taiko players with partners and children, and how difficult it can be to leave them at home while we are off having fun. So we thought, "why not make it possible for them to join us"! In this way we get to know a little more about you and your life outside of taiko, and you can share the experience with those closest to you!
Please be advised, as a Participant-Guest you should have your own idea of what YOU want to do during UTE. There are so many options available, but in the end, our Participants will need to have the freedom to concentrate and participate fully in our taiko activities. So as a Participant-Guest, you should have a means of transportation and an idea of some things you would like to do. Rannoch (UTE director & Utah guide) would be happy in helping you put together some ideas, and you can always meet up with us for meals and join us on our afternoon excursions!

Please note the following:
Participant-Guests must have their own transportation, and are responsible for their own park admission where applicable.
Participant-Guests will be booked into a private room just like participants.
Children must be at least 7 years old.
Participant-Guests between 7 and 18 years of age must be accompanied by another Participant-Guest who is the parent/guardian of said child/children. (in other words, Participants cannot be responsible for their own children. A parent/legal guardian who is a Participant-Guest needs to be responsible for them for the duration of UTE.
Taiko workshop sessions are limited to Participants only.
*Children registered at a discount rate will share a room with a sibling
We will cap registration at 30 Participants (and an additional 10 places for Participant Guests). We felt that a smaller group would make the experience much more personal and meaningful. With 30 people and 10 days, there should be ample time for each person to connect with every other person in the group in a meaningful way.
Our goal is that in the end each person feels that he/she was an integral part in creating the experience for the group and has developed many close, personal connections.
We wanted to make this more than just a taiko event held in a beautiful location. We want you to feel the freedom and experience the peace, beauty and sense of adventure that this location offers. We want you to be inspired to create an experience that is uniquely your own.
Don't worry, there is so much to do, with something for everyone. Maybe your experience leads you to meditating by a quiet stream, or taking a peaceful walk with a new friend. Maybe you decide to try cliff jumping in the lake or rock climbing in the canyon! The point is, it is your experience and your adventure. You can make it as peaceful and relaxing or as exciting and adrenaline-filled as you like.

Shuttle transportation from/to airport (shuttle transport will be offered twice on August 1st and twice August 10th at 11:00AM and 5:00PM). You can choose the time that works best for your particular flight.

Fishing License & tackle (a limited amount of fishing poles will be available)
Travel Insurance (it is highly recommended that you purchase travel insurance prior to your trip).

We plan on creating a curriculum of workshop sessions that will help develop our creativity and deepen our exploration with the taiko. Sessions will be broken into three broad categories:
Skills and Drills sessions will be focused on building our technique by focusing on a single skill and a drill or way to practice that skill.
Deep Dive sessions will be focused on a common style or well known piece but getting to a place of deeper understanding and personal connection.
Collaboration and Exploration sessions will be focused on developing our improvisation abilities and unlocking new creative possibilities. In the end we will be bringing all of these aspects together to create a new arrangement of an existing piece or a brand new piece.
Nope! All workshop sessions will be available to everyone.
Arrivals will be Saturday, August 1st, - we begin with dinner, around 7:00PM.
Departures will be Monday, August 10th. Our event will officially end Monday morning..
Participants: Minimum age limit is 18 years old unless accompanied by a participant parent, then the minimum age is 12.
Participant-Guests: minimum age limit is 7 years old.
UTE is tailored to be an experience that is fun and challenging for EVERYONE, regardless skill level. Content is being specifically designed to accommodate a variety of skill levels. Much of the work we will be doing is geared towards getting you out of your comfort zone to a place where you can freely express, create and push your own boundaries. From this perspective, skill level becomes largely irrelevant.
That being said, a certain degree of skill will definitely enhance your experience. If you feel comfortable playing taiko and you enjoy a challenge, you should fit right in!

Central Utah provides a perfect location for us for many reasons.
It is incredibly beautiful, peaceful and inspiring. A perfect venue for building creativity.
It is not touristed. The locations we will visit are often completely void of visitors. This gives us a chance to really experience and explore the area the way the locals do.
It is an area that has never been exposed to taiko. There's nothing like sharing taiko with a brand new audience!
The UTE director (Rannoch Purcell) was born and reared in Central Utah, so we have the advantage of having a local as our guide to the best spots the area has to offer.
Yes! There will be a marketplace at UTE and we will let you know when kaDON will begin taking pre-orders that can be picked up at the event. Shipping charges are waived for all pre-orders, so it is a great opportunity to coordinate purchases for other members of your ensemble who do not plan to attend.
